The Big Bang Query

I woke up this morning with a question in my brain. Usually they’re introspective, thought-provoking, insightful ponderings.
Today I wondered how many puns existed for my favorite sitcom shows.
After doing some Internet digging, I found a hearty list for all three that I couldn’t help but share with the rest of you. And I only hope you find them, and puns, as enjoyable as I do. Or wince-worthy. Depending on your inclination.

Big Bang Theory (Howard Wolowitz Puns):
“Hey girl, are you made of copper and tellurium? Because you are CuTE.”
(Whatever Tellurium is.)
“Do you love water? That means you love 80% of me.”
“You must be the square root of two, because I feel irrational around you.”

Leave it to the engineer to throw in the math jokes.

“I’m making a book about anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down!”

How I Met Your Mother:
“Why does Barney wear formal attire? It suits him.”
“I just met an awesome cow. It was udderly legen…wait for it…dairy.”
(Wince.)
“I went to a wedding last week where the bride married a television. The ceremony was alright, but the reception was excellent!”

For a visual touch, a picture of a seagull with Marshall’s head: a Marshgull. Hyuck.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S

"I can handle it, handle's my middle name. Actually it's the middle part of my first name."
(Courtesy of Chandler Bing.)
“The bride got a new name, and a dress.” (Think about it.)
“Chefs trade recipes on a knead to know basis.”
“I break into song if I can’t find the key.”

A pedestrian-crossing picture with Ross’ face posted inside.
“Use ROSSwalk.”

I had fun researching all the new jokes; it wasn’t a complete punishment.
…I tried.

If you have or have heard a better joke or pun, especially with original sitcoms or brand new shows, leave them in the comments!

The One With "The Knot"

With every good sitcom comes a good nuptial; then again, not sure I need to tell this crowd that, the same one studiously waiting for Robin and Barney’s wedding along with Ted and the ubiquitous Mother’s.
But your blogger found a list of the top 19 sitcom weddings and—out of curiosity—combed through to see where our favorites ranked, and why. The results fall as follows:

#5 Ross and Emily, F.R.I.E.N.D.S

I feel badly that every wedding hitherto led to successful relationships. And then there’s Ross.
“I, Ross, take thee…Rachel…”
In all fairness, Rachel realized in the same episode she loved Ross in return and flew to London to tell him. Still, this isn’t the first time Ross’ insensitivity got him into trouble; he nearly put their whole wedding on blast when he told Emily it’s “now or never” when they discovered their location was soon to be demolished.

#11 Monica and Chandler, F.R.I.E.N.D.S

(Number 11?! I hope these don’t fall in favorites order!)
In this dual-episode Season 7 finale, Monica follows through with her rose-petal-and-candle proposal by marrying the “can I be anymore lucky?” Chandler Bing. Joey sealed the deal in what I consider to be the sweetest ceremony this side of ten seasons.

#13 Lily and Marshall, How I Met Your Mother

Finally, one from the HIMYM cast and crew. Ted and Robin may have stolen a lot of the show (or maybe just Barney’s show), but Lily and Marshall got to enjoy every bit of their much anticipated—though not such a long time coming—wedding. Everything, at least, but the food. Now we’ll never know if the spread or cake were legen…wait for it…

#14 Bernadette and Howard, The Big Bang Theory

I dub thee, wedding, the most creative wedding on the list! The satellite-struck astronaut and his breadwinning new bride had their entire ceremony, given away by not one, but five of their closest friends: Penny, Leonard, Amy, Sheldon, and Google Earth.

The One With The Finger

“It’s this dumb thing that Ross made up just to try to fool our parents. It’s a way of giving the finger without actually having to give it…it was the first time I realized I was cooler than my big brother.”
-- Monica, on Ross’ fake “finger” gesture

F.R.I.E.N.D.S gave us fans plenty of things to borrow and take away from the show, things we only need see once and instantly be transported back. Some of the sweeter legacies include Marcel, “How you doin’?” and “I got off the plane.”
…And then there’s Ross’ version of “the finger.”

Demonstrating with Rachel and Monica during its inaugural appearance, the gesture—pounding two inward-facing fists together, twice, in quick succession—became something all the F.R.I.E.N.D.S inevitably adopted. Wonder if this makes Monica cooler than every other character in the cast.

Next, Rachel gives “the finger” to Ross when he critiques a failed relationship move. Not to be one-upped, he replicates the signal with two elbows over two fists! I think I love best how offended Ross looks every time he earns the diss, despite how off-handedly everyone else behaves.

The most pivotal scene centered around Ross’ invention? In my opinion, it’s the episode with girls-vs.-guys game, Rachel and Monica against Joey and Chandler. The entire game might be confused for an odd feud between Rachel and Joey, Monica and Chandler, the way they trade spots and give the gesture all the way!
Pop quiz: what’s the game called?

Although my favorite occurrence has to be when Joey attempted the move in his army uniform. He expression and pointed style screamed Joey Tribbiani. While I wouldn’t wish him caught in the act, I in turn screamed laughing the first time I saw the episode!

Comment with your favorite F.R.I.E.N.D.S-ism! There’s certainly enough in the last ten seasons to go around!

How To: F.R.I.E.N.D.S Reunion

What am I talking about, every reunion with friends is a party by itself! Though, of course, I mean pulling out all the stops: Friends themed decorations, food, DVDs.
Oh, did you think I meant your closest neighbors or co-workers? I’m referring to the famed Big Apple bunch that hijacked out 8 pm time slots for ten years. It’s a F.R.I.E.N.D.S festivity.

Let’s start with the:

·      Invitations

Make them something that says F.R.I.E.N.D.S without saying F.R.I.E.N.D.S. My recommendation? A faux wedding-invite for one of Ross’ many nuptials…perhaps writing a slightly-skewed variation of the guest’s name in place of their actual! Ouch.

Once the date is set and your six guests are allotted (no more, no less), time to think about the:

·      Decorations

Posters are the most eye-catching things, and if you’re aiming for the iconic décor from Monica’s own digs, you’ll definitely need to snag what Cool TV Props has to offer. How about the Jouets Poster from her living room wall?  Frame it over the TV alongside something else garnishing the DVD area…try Rachel Green’s Excelsior poster.

Why just these two? Because then you’ll secure the most important adornment of all, for free: the peephole keychain! You could buy the official mirror-sized version for your front door or main entrance, but the keychain makes a great keepsake, and travels anytime, anywhere.

Time to consider the:

·      Menu

Score your favorite New York snacks and sides for a session of F.R.I.E.N.D.S seasons DVD watching and reminiscing—just watch for any sticky cookbook pages. A good idea would be to get a brew of your favorite coffee or hot drink ready, served in cups with handmade Central Perk labels.

However you spin the theme, friends always like spending time with other F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Sorry. Had to squeeze in one last pun.

Fans Talk: Monica Geller

When you think neat, organized, unspontaneous, frizzy, fun, kind, caring, your mind probably wanders to your more deranged housecat.
Well, stop that, and start thinking about F.R.I.E.N.D.S femme Monica Geller.

Fans dissect the shining qualities, for good or ill, making up the “mother hen” star of the show. Monica and Rachel’s apartment boasts more scenes than any Manhattan layaway for the entire season run, for good reason. Monica hosts and boasts, bends-over-backwards for her friends and loved ones, and sometimes turns heads trying to win table-tennis tournaments.

Let’s take a closer look at our contortionist, shall we?

“Okay, so I’m responsible, I’m organized, but hey, I can be a kook!”
-- Monica Geller

MoniCAN, not MoniCAN’T: a repeated sentiment by an online Facebook fan, says it best. Monica’s can-do attitude pervades her career and love life. Between restaurant-and-stock-hopping (remember her Moondance Diner days?), she plows ahead, the driving force behind her success, with only her gumption and wit behind that wheel.

“Monica. She’s pretty, she’s sweet, she’s simply amazing. I just love the Geller’s.”
-- xforeverfangirl.tumblr

Left with her label-maker, Monica organizes and prototypes her friends’ lives and luxuries. F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans catch her cleaning in her sleep, or managing her frizzy curls with cornrows. There isn’t a dilemma she can’t ditch.

Including the patch I can’t ignore, if it can even be called a “dilemma” (we’ll stick with change—it indeed did change), the years the ‘friends’ dubbed: “Fat Monica.” Monica indeed weighed more growing up than her Greenwich self, spurred to change by finally hearing Chandler call her “fat” one Thanksgiving (what IS it with Thanksgivings on sitcom shows?). She cut the weight in one year.
Ironically, in The One That Could Have Been, she ended up with Chandler despite her size. A fitting end for that relationship…no pun intended.

As you can see, writing such a short piece on such a complex, amazing character as Monica hardly does her justice. But the fans know her power and don’t cease to remark on her legacy. She is why fans talk.
